Care instructions are some simple guidelines Dr. Buchsieb gives patients for taking good care of their oral health and appliances, like retainers or Invisalign® aligners. After your treatment with braces, you’ll need to wear a retainer and carefully follow the instructions given to you by Dr. Buchsieb to take care of your gums, teeth, and mouth. It’s important to pay attention to them because how you care for your dental health before, during, and after your orthodontic treatment can influence your treatment outcomes, lower your risks of complications, and improve your overall oral health.

How can I care for my dental health during Invisalign^® treatment?

Dr. Buchsieb provides detailed care instructions to help you maintain your dental health before, during, and after your Invisalign^® orthodontic treatment.

With every orthodontic treatment, you should keep the area where your teeth meet your gums clean. For Invisalign^® aligners, simply remove them to begin your cleaning regimen. Rinse your aligners with water to remove any particles of food debris. It’s important that you floss daily and brush your teeth twice a day. And don’t forget to clean your tongue using a toothbrush or a tongue scraper. Bacteria can reside, and it is important to eliminate it.

Once your aligners come out, you may need to wear a removable retainer for some time. When removing your aligners or retainer, place them in a safe storage case.

What should I do if I have a problem with my braces?

Smile With Style Orthodontics is here to help in any emergency with your braces. Remember, braces are delicate and must be handled to prevent damage. Even if you follow the care instructions for your braces, they may get damaged.

Emergency orthodontic kits are available for purchase at the Smile With Style Orthodontics front desk. The kit includes pliers, floss and floss threader, and orthodontic wax.

What if a band or bracket becomes loose?

If a bracket or band on your braces loosens and it’s still attached to the wire, you should leave it in place. If it’s uncomfortable, you can place wax on it. If it comes out completely, you can wrap the loose bracket or band in tissue and bring it to the office.

What do I do if I have a loose wire tie?

If a wire tie gets loose and pokes the inside of your mouth, gently tuck the wire back into place with a blunt object like a pencil eraser or cover the end with a piece of wax.

Is there anything I can do about soreness and discomfort?

If you have mild soreness following your orthodontic visit, it should subside by taking over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If you have concerns or you’re experiencing long-term soreness and discomfort, visit Smile With Style Orthodontics for an evaluation.
